lets talk

The science behind acupuncture

Acupuncture originated over 2000 years ago in China and has a long-recorded history of effective treatment. A modern approach to acupuncture is understanding the science behind ancient traditions. The mechanisms underlying how acupuncture works from a biomedical perspective have been widely researched and we now understand that acupuncture has the following beneficial effects:

Activates the body’s natural opioid mechanisms in the brain and spinal cord causing release of endorphins which bring pain relief naturally

Stimulates healing and cell repair through activation of the fascia network (connective tissue) upon insertion of needles

Stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (the relaxation response) to help regulate stress, decrease anxiety, improve digestion and sleep

Stimulates the release of neurotransmitters including serotonin and dopamine which benefit physical and emotional health and sense of well being

the evidence for acupuncture

A modern approach to acupuncture utilizes research outcomes as an evidence-based approach to applying acupuncture techniques as a treatment modality.

Increasing evidence has supported the safety and effectiveness of acupuncture in many clinical areas including pain, cancer, stroke, mood and sleep disorders, and autoimmune diseases among many others. Some of the most trusted medical groups in the country including the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Pain Society support the use of acupuncture as part of a treatment plan for chronic pain and other health concerns.
